Ambitious plans to develop Barrow's docklands included 1,500 jobs, 925 new homes and a yacht marina with 400 berths. Much of Cavendish Dock would become a water conservation park for wildlife.

The Illyria theatre company presented William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream at Brantwood, on the shores of Coniston Water.

Andy and Marguerite Coulter, of Huddleston Road, Millom, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr Coulter worked at Sellafield for 30 years.

A report said that up to 4,000 jobs could be created if a new nuclear power station was built at Sellafield in West Cumbria.

Industry minister Tim Salisbury was to visit the Evening Mail to see the newspaper's computerised newsroom and production facilities. It was the result of a £250,000 investment by owners CN Group.

The Miss J. Robb millinery shop opened at 69 Forshaw Street after a move from Dalton Road.

The Swedish ship Volvi was unloading paper pulp in Ramsden Dock, Barrow. In Buccleuch Dock was James Fisher cargo ships Firth Fisher and Stream Fisher.

There was to be a special showing of the Vickers' Centenary Film at the ABC cinema on Abbey Road, Barrow, on September 19. It was for retired shipyard workers and each could claim two free tickets.
