Is dog fouling a problem in your community?

Let’s take pride and keep streets clean
I VERY much welcome the comments made by Leo Clarke and Councillor Guselli with regards to dog fouling on the streets and public walkways in Barrow, (Evening Mail, January 14).
I have only recently moved back into the area and now live on Newbarns Road.
I walked my young son, aged 23 months, down to the community centre at Abbotsvale and found myself having to carry him, as he could not avoid the amount on dog muck on the pavements.
I have reported this street and Greengate Street to the dog warden but so far have heard nothing.
Unfortunately, I do not think we can rely on goodwill to keep our streets clean. I believe the council need to put up signs for fixed penalties – and impose them where possible.
The general public also need to take a bit more pride in Barrow and start reporting these lazy, inconsiderate individuals before another toddler gets a face full of it.
Barrow can be a bit depressing with shops being boarded up by the minute.
Let’s at least keep the streets as clean as possible!

Clean up after horses too
AS a responsible dog owner, I fully agree that owners of dogs should clean up after their pet.
I daily walk down Amphitrite Street on Walney, dodging poo that other poor souls haven’t seen and trod in.
I also think that horse owners either need to keep off pavements or clean up after their pet.
I understand the rider can’t be expected to carry extra large poo bags and jump off their horse to pick it up, but I find that horse muck (often a lot larger than dog muck) is as bad for being splattered all over pavements.
Care about your pets, clean up after them.

Named and Shamed....
Looks like the majority of dog-owners in Barrow and elsewhere near Barrow have let everybody down by not cleaning up after their dog. This is apparent by the number of disappointed letter-writers who have registered their sense of revulsion at the quagmire of filth left on pavements all over town and on grass in the open fields and parks. NAME AND SHAME ought to be the order of the day and report them to the Police if you happen to know them. With a few of those being exposed, perhaps others will take note and exercise a bit of care that responsibility and ownership of pet dogs do go hand in hand.

Have your say
i totally agree with all of the above comments. Recently within the last month i have had to clear up somebody else's dog poop from outside my house..I came home from doing a morning shift as a carer..nothing there..and within 1 hour on my way back out it looked like a horse had messed from gate to end of garden wall which is about 12foot in length. It was obvious from the trail that the poor animal was being dragged along while fowling! and then left for me to clear up as i live on a main street with a school across the road..imagine the horror of people looking disgustedly at my house?..there was so much 'poop' that i almost filled a carrier bag..DISGUSTING!!!. This is not the first time it has happened..i also find that some dog owners are also too bone idle to dispose of their pets muck even when picked up..judging by the amount of times i have seen (and disposed of myself) used bags left on the roadside..pavement..grass or hanging from branches!!!...i would dread to think what disease my nieces/nephews would be picking up from play areas etc because of 'some' peoples laziness. SO as a result i have taken drastic measures to catch and name and shame anymore 'hapless' owners by installing CCTV on my property to bring these pet owners too 'justice' and make sure that they pay the fines which are set by the council. Why on earth should it be left to me, my daughter or anyone else to clear up someone else's mess???..my actions may sound a bit drastic to some but how else can the council impose these fines if there is no monitoring system?...so dog owners beware..I AM WATCHING YOU!!!
